My AC is running but the house is not cooling. What is wrong?
The most common causes are a dirty condenser coil, a failing capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, or a badly restricted filter. Low refrigerant in particular means there is a leak somewhere, since a sealed system does not consume it.
Does the size of the unit really matter?
It matters more than most people expect. An oversized system cools the air quickly, shuts off before it has pulled any humidity out, and leaves the house cold and clammy while wearing itself out through short cycling.
How long does an air conditioner last?
Twelve to eighteen years is typical in this climate, and units here often last toward the upper end simply because they are not running eight months a year the way they would in the south.
